I read a very interesting article recently by A. J. Schuler, Psy. D – “Top Ten Reasons Why People Resist Change”.
We all want POSITIVE change, and yet, many people don’t take action… WHY? The fact is, the transition lies not only in ‘taking action’, but also in our attitude and approach to change itself.
Let me share with you the top ten reasons. I also want to share with you some important messages to EMPOWER you to conquer your resistance to change, and take the steps you need to achieve your most meaningful goals and desires!

Reasons Why People Resist Change (by A. J. Schuler) |
Justine’s Message for PERSONAL POWER! |
| “The risk of change is sees as greater than the risk of standing still.” | Consider the RISKS of STANDING-STILL! What will you life be like in 2, 5, 10, 20 years from now if you do not embrace positive change? What are the risks to your health, wealth, family, fulfillment, happiness, and personal success if you do not create positive change? |
| “People feel connected to other people who are identified with the old way.” | Trust yourself. Follow for intuition for a better life! Surround yourself with people who can support and love you, no matter what you do! Surround yourself with people who are inspired and successful! Follow the steps of people who have achieved what YOU want to achieve. Detach yourself from the people who bring you down, and create new positive relationships with the people who bring you up! |
| “People have no role models for the new activity.” | Don’t have a role model? FIND ONE! There are no limits to finding the best mentors for what you aspire to achieve in your life. There are millions of successful people, in various areas of LIFE, and the boundaries to connect with them have been shattered by the INTERNET! Connect with them, learn from them, follow them… |
| “People fear they lack the competence to change.” | Where you born with SKILLS? No, you developed them, through knowledge and experience. What is different now? Can you not develop new skills? Yes, YOU CAN! (whether you WANT TO is another story…). It is comforting to take action in something when we are competent and confident, and it surely is a challenge to jump in something that is new. It is, however, part of the process. Babies fall over (a lot) before then can walk. Don’t wait until you are perfect before you take action. Skills get developed THROUGH action and experience. Let go of the fear… empower yourself to do this, and challenge the limiting beliefs that are holding you back. |
| “People feel overloaded or overwhelmed.” | One step at a time! You are in TRANSITION! There is no need to jump in the deep end… but you must BEGIN! When you get started, you will see changes in yourself and in your environment. Allow yourself the space and time to grow into your new internal and external worlds. If you are overloaded, slow down! If you are overwhelmed, take a pause to address and respect your emotions. Create a concise action plan to realise clearly defined goals, and find a way to be supported in your journey. |
| “People have a healthy skepticism and want to be sure new ideas are sound.” | Heard of paralysis by analysis? You can spend a long time analyzing… but often, ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’, and the only way to really know something is to EXPERIENCE and ENGAGE IN it. Realise that you CAN and DESERVE to achieve your DREAMS. Then find a VEHICLE for success, and take calculated risks. To achieve extraordinary things, you need to step out of the ordinary. |
| “People fear hidden agendas among would-be reformers.” | Stop asking yourself ‘What’s in it for THEM?’… The most important question is ‘What’s in it for YOU?’! Follow your intuition and learn to trust people again. The universe is NOT against you (unless you CHOOSE to believe that). Sure, there might be something in it for them…. but there is enough abundance for EVERYBODY! It’s up to you to receive your share. |
| “People feel the proposed change threatens their notions of themselves.” | We all have a personal definition of ourselves. We see ourselves as kind, sociable, loners, leaders, followers, ambitious, spiritual, energetic, realistic, optimistic, self-driven, carefree, safe, emotional, fearful, daring, normal, etc… and often our goals require that we change or challenge some of these personal attributes. We feel a burning desire to grow and expand BEYOND ourselves, beyond our past and history! If the changes you make in yourself bring the realisation of your most meaningful desires, isn’t that worth it? It takes courage. Find it. |
| “People anticipate a loss of status or quality of life.” | Achieving extraordinary things will always involve challenges, obstacles, sacrifices, discomfort and growth. Here is a simple rule: If you are not willing to go through this, to allow yourself to grow through every challenge, to step out of your comfort zone, and to break through your limits, you do not WANT the OUTCOME enough. Realising your DREAMS requires tenacity, persistence, passion and patience, all of which cannot be produced without MEANINGFUL goals and BURNING desires. |
| “People genuinely believe that the proposed change is a bad idea.” | Do you KNOW it’s a bad idea? Are you making an INFORMED decision? If it is a bad idea, and you genuinely and intuitively know that you should not make a change, perhaps you are right. You may need to wait for the right time, find your resources, or even allow for other transitions to happen before you can make this change. Challenge your thoughts – is this really a bad idea? If you don’t take action on this, what will the outcome be? What are your options? If this is a bad idea, what is the GOOD idea and how can you take action now? |

Great post, Justine! I really liked the way that you put everything in terms of turning around the negative thoughts that hold us back, especially the first one about the cost of action vs. the cost of inaction. I know the old saying that it’s better to deal with the devil you know, but there are times where you have to say to yourself that you’re still dealing with a devil and take action to exorcise it.

Love the post Justine. People get comfortable within their fear based thoughts not realizing how they are mortgaging their future. This post is definitely a must read for many people. Thanks again Justine. You’re awesome.

This is great Justine. This allows one to do a self-evaluation and to see whether or not each item applies.
Thanks for sharing here.
